Reggae & Funk - Andy Aledort - Guitar World Page Three

If this counting time thing is all new to you and you are asking your self if you are ready for this rhythmically or not then you probably aren't ready and need to go here to Richard Smiths rhythm guitar lesson who takes you by the hand practically and teaches you to count 16th notes. Out Loud!

It absolutely needs to be out loud! And his guitar lesson is a lot of fun in its self. It too has a section on James Browns guitar player Jimmy Nolan and the chord inversions he used on so many famous tunes. Then after watching that 25 times come back here for a more complex rhythm lesson because there is no one guitar lesson with all the answers.  To really start playing you'll need a good guitar reference book too if you want to keep your sanity. This would make a good gift too.

What if you already can count time and tap your foot? Then you are going to love the 15 minutes comprising the Funk section of this lesson. We start with everyones favorite funk chord F9. The chord isn't the hard part. The hard part is slowing everything down enough, which in my view, is not being done here. We combine chordal accents with dead string accents in a very syncopated 16th note rhythm. Here you want to open the .PDF file and its confusing because its not 4 notes to the measure anymore and 'Kansas' is a long way off.

The TAB can be figured out if you have some facility with rhythmic notation and rests and are persistent but goes a bit too fast for even me. Its true Its hard to play some of these rhythms slowly. Its always good to warm up before attempting more advanced material. I GROKED more than one really nice feeling of satisfaction as my rhythm improved using the Richard Smith guitar lesson I mention above and have played along to it more than 40 times.

I like Andy Aledort a lot but this is for players who already have a bit of rhythm developed and are looking to develop it more. These exercise are played quickly up to speed and a step or two ahead for neophyte funksters. Don't let that stop you. You can learn a lot here and shake your booty too. Now you know where to go if its clarification your wanting.
